Royal Philips Electronics has supplied Yorkshire based GHD, the manufacturer of hair styling irons, with an LED lighting solution for its recently opened prestigious offices in the centre of Leeds. The lighting specification was developed by Litetask along with John Sheffield, a director of Bradford based electrical contractors, Southern & Redfern who carried out the installation.
Mark McDonnell of Litetask, explains why Philips iW Cove Powercore LED luminaires were selected to fulfill the client’s brief,” Whilst it was essential that the lighting design had a high visual impact it also had to be energy efficient at the same time. Using Philips LED modules seem to be the ideal choice as they met both of these criteria. Plus the fact that they have a 3 year guarantee means that you can specify with confidence.”
The ‘wow’ factor of the lighting design was provided by installing 718 of Philips SSL ‘iW Cove Powercore‘ LED luminaires in the main office and catwalk areas as well as in the entrance lobby. ‘Intelligent white’ (iW) Cove is an LED luminaire which is ideally suited for alcove applications.
Unlike conventional white light fixtures, iW Cove Powercore allows colour temperature control within the range of 3000K to 6500K, offering variable atmosphere with the simple push of a button. Also, unlike traditional light sources, white LEDs maintain their precise colour temperature even as they’re dimmed.
In addition, the luminaires have end to end locking connectors for continuous streams of light which complements the sleek contemporary interior design of the GHD offices.
As the ‘Powercore’ technology is an integral part of the luminaire this means in essence that the need for an external power supply is eliminated as it has power and data processing within the unit. Creating the variable change of white was achieved via a Mode DMX lighting control system.
As McDonnell concludes, “LED lighting solutions offer a huge variety of controllable and scalable lighting options, while reducing energy, CO2 emissions and maintenance costs compared with traditional light sources.”

While LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lighting has been around since the 1960s, it’s only now coming into widespread use and being touted as the next generation of energy efficient lighting for homes, offices, cars, and more.
LEDs—also known as solid-state lighting—use the movement of electrons through a semiconductor material to create light. While an extremely efficient form of lighting, a single LED doesn’t produce enough light for larger applications. When bundled together, however, LEDs become a powerful and efficient lighting system.

While the advantages of LED lighting are many, the one big disadvantage is cost. While a standard incandescent bulb sells for under a dollar and compact fluorescents are down to $2 to $3, LEDs that produce enough light for general everyday applications still cost times as much.

It is definitely on the right track with its new Light-on-Demand modular LED lighting system, which features battery-backed LED light units that plug into a variety of fixtures and keep going even when the power goes out, but we’ll wait until the designers can shake a little more ugly off this kit before we bring it home. The line is launching with several standard fixtures like the wired desk lamp and wireless wall sconce shown here, as well as a wireless motion detector and several emergency lighting solutions. Energizer says the gear was developed in response to research that showed people were “frustrated” by power outages and wanted lamps that stayed lit even during blackouts — which seems fairly obvious to us, but we’re not lighting researchers. Light-on-Demand units should be popping up in Targets later this month, but if it really wanted to make a go of this, they’d hit us with a battery-backed LED light bulb, no?
